HOW TO WRITE...
Every January, I find myself casually visiting every stationery and gift store in my neighborhood and browsing the newest offerings of Valentine's Day products to hit the shelves. It's refreshing to see all the "love-inspired" products after months of Santa Clause, ugly sweaters, and Candy Canes.
As we get closer to the end of the month, my casual shopping visits often turn from an invisible passer-by to an on-location cupid support member for those debating between 'the right card to give" and the "perfect gift" to compliment a romantic night out.
One can almost hear the words “Don't fuck this up” being chanted inside the weary shopper's heads.
Like clockwork, as I am browsing for cards, I often find myself chatting with some poor guy (and sometimes girls) who is up to their head in love… but just speechless when it comes to finding the words to profess their undying love on paper.
“I just don’t know what to say,” they tell me with big sad puppy dog eyes.
So, in honor of all those "lost in love puppies," I thought that this year I share my tips for writing the perfect love letter and help everyone out.
Without further delay, I present:
How To Write A Love Letter
These three parts are the key ingredient to writing a simple, yet romantic love letter. A Love Letter should be no longer than a couple of standard sheets of stationery paper or the inside of a beautiful card.
1. The Reminder
Always start a letter with a simple, honest statement that reminds your loved one of your time together. Say things like:
“The past few years have been life-changing.” or “Two years ago when we met- I was a beer-drinking Frat Guy and now you have made me an honest man.”
AVOID ALL TEMPTATION to get cheesy or quote something you heard in a movie. Plus- “You Complete Me” is just- well wrong.
Keep it short and sweet.
2. The Confession
This should be the body of your letter. It will say things like “There are times that I think of life without you- and I feel incomplete and broken.” Or “I want you to know how happy you have made me, I enjoy waking up next to you, holding your hand, and the smell of your perfume in the morning."
Share genuine feelings here, be vulnerable.
3. The Proclamation
This part is important. It solidifies and renews your love past any expiration or doubt that anyone can have. It’s always great to hear that someone loves you, forever. So remind them.
But in this proclamation- provide security, safety, and most of all humor. It’s a great moment to make them laugh!
It should sound like this:
” I want you to know that I will hold your hand whenever you are near me, that I will protect you from anyone or anything life will throw at us. (Including that moment that someone attempts to buy that last cupcake you were craving at Sprinkles.) Being your husband has been the greatest privilege of my life and I could not think of a greater way to spend the rest of my life. I love you.”
Remember friends- short and sweet and to the point! This is love, not your college admission application.
